Is there a way to draw each of the step flange using the linear pattern?
What is the best way with the least steps to draw the above?
Make the hole with end condition up to surface and select the surface beneath last flange. Make the linear pattern and don't mark geometry pattern option
Yes that'll work for the holes.
...but what about the bends?
Somehow SW does not allow linear patterns on these bends.
I'm not quite certain why you would want to do this but it does work if you cut the base (like steps), then add one flange, then do a linear pattern on the flange. You do have to skip the instances you don't want.
I was treating it as a diagonal pattern, that's why mine didn't work.
Well,, I'll be darned.. The diagonal pattern does work!.. Thank you for making me think about this.
What SW version are you using because I can't get it to work in SW 2015 SP4.0
I've did this for other features before but when it comes to flanges, SW refuses to do it.
I've attached my file, if you don't mind, can you please tell me if it works on your end?
Well, this certainly is interesting Edwin. When I open your file and start the linear pattern command I get this.
I am using 2015 SP2.1 If I don't rebuild I can't pattern the flange.
If I rebuild it works fine. I have attached your file with the flange patterned. Did my previous file work ok on your system? Let me know if this file works ok. I'm really curious.
Yes Dennis, I was able to open your file without any problems.
It then tried it afresh on SW2015 SP4.0 and couldn't get it to work.
Instead I got the same error messages you have.
Certainly has me scratching my head. Sounds like the Service Packs are going backwards in the case. I'm going to look into this some more.
My exact thoughts too.
I've reported to my VAR ..hopefully it'll get fixed.
Good idea and a good reason for me not to upgrade my SP.
Hi, Edwin. I think I have the same issue and found your thread while scratching my head. Did you ever resolve this? I probably won't be able to let this go - I need resolution here!
I'm running SW12 SP5.0
I just created a simple example file. When I try to pattern my edge flange It says, "Rebuild Errors" - "Geometry pattern results in disjoint bodies. ". Later I somehow saved my part and reopened it and got the noise about SolidWorks having to rebuild the model which I don't think I've ever seen before on any part. I was very surprised when I got the initial error as I think I've patterned sheet metal features before on a single body.
I'm not very good at understanding or following forum rules - if someone thinks I should create a new thread I will. I thought I'd add on here since it wasn't marked as solved and it might be the same root cause. I was unable to open the previously attached and discussed newer files to play with those.
Delete your selection in "Features to Pattern" (red arrow) and place it in "Bodies to Pattern" (purple arrow). It should work then.
Thanks, Glenn. I had tried that, but it doesn't work since there is only one body.
I just logged back in, however, to post the resolution was to uncheck "Geometry pattern". I guess I need to go back in and re-learn what that does under the hood. Some CSWP I am. Sorry for hijacking the thread with what I now believe is a different issue.
If your flange was merged with the main body, then you're right, patterning the body probably wouldn't work. I rarely work with sheet metal, so I didn't think about that.
I had to think how we would have done this part in the past, did a lot of sheet metal work from 1997 to 2013 or so... Now there are so many new features that try to automate the process and they still don't work right....
