I'm wanting to rename some of my variables to make them more understandable for other people to decipher our setup. What effect would it have on the system if any?
Hi Mike, it shouldn't have much effect on the data cards. What you would need to do, is make sure that your mapping to SolidWorks custom properties remains the same as it was before.
All the metadata is stored with reference of variable ID so changing variable name won’t affect anything on card design etc. However as Prasad mentioned, make sure you are not changing anything in the property mapping. Also the variable name by itself doesn’t make any difference to end user - except if they runhelp to know the details of variable mapping. What they see on card is variable value.
The variable name does show up for the user in the Variables search tab (if you have one). And Version Free variable names can appear in History.
After a rename there is something that you have to manually fix... trying to remember, and I think it is Dispatch scripts.
I completely overlooked search - sorry for that Brian.
Renaming a variable would require changes in dispatch and any custom API add in that rely on "variable name"
I thought of two others:
*Settings>>Copy Tree. Any variables you set there need to be manually renamed.
The new Card Variable name will need to be selected (this one is rather disappointing, I thought it would auto update because it is a drop down list).
