I found I can float the 1st assembled item with a right click.
Where is the option to always float the 1st assembled item in a new assembly by default?
There isn't one. The first component inserted will always be fixed. See #10 here: Frequently Asked Forum Questions
Thanks. It was one of the VAR videos that hinted to the fact that this option could be set.
If I find the reference again, I will post it.
For now, Float will have to do.
Right Click and select float
In most cases here after I insert an item, I will "float" the item and then mate using the standard planes. I want my first item at 0,0,0 for sure, years ago SW had issues when you dropped a part in an assembly and it would stay fixed right where you release the mouse button, then your coordinates were screwed up. After a few huge mistakes, I still don't like to load a part any other way, don't matter even if they fixed it years ago.
I remember seeing a how to video - for individual parts, but probably works for assemblies also (not sure) - where you have your part open (or in this case the assembly) and then you start a new assembly and instead of dragging an dropping you use the function to insert a new part and select the part and then use the Green Check mark to insert. This will place the part with the orientation and origin point from the part being inserted at the new assembly origin and with the same orientation. It's been a while and I have not tried it yet, but you can give it a try.
It will still fix the part but it will be at the origin and orientation you want (assuming the original part or assembly was at that location and orientation).
Yep. I explained that in the FAQ Discussion I linked to above.
