Whenever I try to open any file or save a new part I created, the program immediately crashes and closes. Does anyone know what is causing this issue?
What SP you've installed?
Could you run SOLIDWORKS Rx tool if that helps you to diagnose the issue.
I am using SolidWorks 2015 x64 SP4. I tried using the Rx tool but didn't get any answers from it.
A recent window update (KB3072630) seems to be causing issues related to many things in SOLIDWORKS. So check if your windows has been patched with KB3072630. If yes then uninstall this update and then do a repair install of SOLIDWORKS.
I just tried running the fix that SW put out that disables that patch. With KB3072630 [disabled], the problem persists.
I have the same issue. It seems that once I am able to get the first model to load, any model loaded after that is fine. I have had luck opening old part files that have not been loaded in a while. Once the old part is open, I can load my recent files and close the old one. May have something to do with files listed under "Browse Recent Documents" in the file menu and their thumbnail previews.
Check in the Windows Task Manager to see if more than 1 instance of SolidWorks.exe is running.
I have had strange results, crashes and long delays when I try to open SW and there is already an instance running.
Sometimes it works fine but other times it tries to load a new instance like the first one is not there and then it seems that they get some kind of conflict.
I have had up to 6 instances running at the same time, but only 1 will actually load drawings.
Other times I had a couple instances running and it loads 1 drawing in one instance and can load several in the other.
I have never figured it out.
I just know it shows up most times when I try to open a file by double clicking on the file in Windows explorer and if it doesn't open right away and I try to double click or open another file before SW has fully loaded I get a new instance.
I just found another posting that may be the same situation but this was supposedly fixed in SP2.
The post I just found sounds allot like mine and I am running SP1.1 where they post says the problem exists.
Re: SW 2015 sp1.1 Crashes with file preview active
Maybe it's back!
This was my post:
SolidWorks startup failure when double clicking file in Windows Explorer
What OS are you running? I`ve seen this issue in windows 10. If you have upgraded to this you need to run solidworks in compatibility mode to solve it.

Instability in SOLIDWORKS due to conflict with Microsoft KB3072630
Yep, I hit this last night updating a test machine running Windows 8.1. It's a SW Installer and MS Installer conflict. Funny thing is that I cry every time I see stuff like this. 2015 appears to be riddled with show stopping problems from the get go. What's up with quality control for DS these days? You think you get a stable version of SW and then get a notice that you need to move to next SP to fix issues with EPDM and then you are blasted on the next SP with something like this. Granted it's a quick fix but come on. Every time I have to change I have a 2-3 week test cycle to start over again. We have a system that uses SW, EPDM, DriveWorks and DriveWorks Live that connect our engineering data, product configurators, marketing document mgt, CRM and quoting systems and partner portals all together. There's a reason we stayed on SW/EPDM 2013! Glad we did.
(11 SW licenses pro and premium, ~30 EPDM mixed licenses, 9 DW and 10 DW Live)
There is your subscription issues, 90 days or else
Thanks for your advice everyone. So my computer is pretty new so I think the content of whatever was in the update was on my computer when I got it so I can't disable it. The update isn't in my update history. I sadly still haven't been able to get the problem fixed.
I was doing some searches last night for similar problems (crashes with SW - only not when opening or saving a part) and one suggestion I saw several times was to fully uninstall and then reinstall the Microsoft .NET Framework in windows.
This seems to have fixed many peoples problems and was what the VAR's had told them to do.
I tried last night to just Update my .NET Framework but it didn't change my issues, Tonight I will try the full uninstall and reinstall.
You can either download the latest from Microsoft or if you have all the install files still on your system from installing SW2015, the is a folder in that install package for Prerequisites and then a sub folder for .NET Framework and that should have the latest copy.
.NET Framework installation.
Please try the following:1. Log into Windows as Administrator and disable and anti-virus/spywareapplications.2. Run the Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool:http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=301353. Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Uninstall Microsoft .NETFramework 4,4. Reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.1 (you will receive another e-mailwithin the next hour with a link to download this file)http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=407735. Run a repair of SW.
What OS are you running?
Do a reinstall, also reinstall the prerequisites as described in this procedure? solidworks_uninstall.pdf
