I want to find the blank dia for a torispherical dish.Is there any options in solidworks for this? Also can you please share the formula to calculate it manually?
Do you have a part you could attach? Here is what i have found about torispherical dish's.
CR = Do KR = 0.1Do SF = 3.5t DH = 0.1935Do – 0.455t THi = SF + DH Do = external head diameter SF = straight flange height Di = internal head diameter DH = depth of dishing CR = crown radius THi = total internal head height KR = knuckle radius t = wall thickness The external head diameter, 'Do' is usually equal to the outside diameter of cylindrical section.
If you are using SW 2015 you can use the flatten surface option, although I'm not sure how accurate it is & it will only work if your surface has no holes or cutouts in it. If your part is a solid body use the surface offset option set to "0" to create a surface & then flatten.
can you please elaborate the process? I am using SW2015..
Lingesh,, Flatten surface is only available in 2015 "Premium". I personally have "Professional" so I can't try it out and test it. From the videos I've seen it seems to work fairly well. I'm thinking it probably develops surfaces as though you took a cross section of the torispherical dish (or any shape) and extruded that (maybe an inch or two) and unfolded it as sheet metal. Or maybe offset outside edge of the cross section (perhaps 50% of material thickness) and used the measure tool to determine how long the total length of lines and arcs are. Since the dish is round this would be your diameter.
You might want to try this website. Has a calculator
Hello Dennis Bacon,
Thank you very much for your information..That link was helpful..Iam using Solidworks 2015 premium..Is there any video tutorial available on this?Or if you know, can you explain the method to flatten?
Yes,,, If you go to YouTube. I'm sure if you just type in Flatten Surface SolidWorks it will get you there. This is an impressive video if I remember correctly.
I think there something in the SW tutorials also.
Edit:.. Just checked there is some tutorials in "What's New" > Flattening Surfaces
Ok,i used forming tool operation to make a dish out of flat sheet..But now the problem is am not able to flatten this sheet..any suggestions helpful..
You can not flatten a form tool. All it gives you is a good visual.
Tell me more about using from tool to make shapes. Nice responses. Thanks
I missed the blank diameter first post, sorry about that. Could you take a front view and convert all the outer edges, and path length dimension it to get the blank diameter? This doesn't account for any stretch in the material though.
