I would like to know the best and easiest approach to model model parts such as the ones shown on the pictures bellow. I was thinking of a wrap and swept combination. However, I am pretty sure I need a solid surface (cylinder) to wrap my sketch around.

You should be able to wrap on a Surface as well
The picture shows the pattern being twisted or on a spiral.
First you need your inner/outer diameter then I would draw one section in a flat state then use the flex tool? to form
Then add the additional sections and join, then add the fillets
I agree with John, a wrap on a surface, followed by a thicken command ought to do the trick. Then maybe some small corner fillets to polish it off.
Because the drawing would be so complex, it's be best to import it onto a flat surface as a sketch block.
A set of sweeps will take forever.

So should I draw my sketch of the pattern on one of the three principal planes, then wrap everything around a cylindrical surface and thicken? How do I take into account the rotation in the pattern along its length. Should I just draw a single ring on my initial sketch and then use some linear pattern for the rest of the rings?
