I have this solidworks file. I need to subtract the object inside from the cylinder outside. Can anyone please advise?
Use "Combine" - Insert-> Features-> Combine
Yes Troy I tired to but it did not work. The combine is always shown in gray that's why I attached my file so you guys can check it out and tell me what's the problem and how to solve it!
combine only works with solid bodies - your inner object is only a surface.
I tried cut with surface, but there is some geometric condition that is preventing it from working.
either fix the surface body and cut with surface, or make it a solid body and use combine.
Thank you Jeremy. do you have any idea about to convert the surface into a solid body?
I tried to convert the surface body into solid body through thicken and knit and both of them did not work. Any other ideas you think?
There is a small open edge as shown
use extend surface and select that edge and it will automatically close that edge.
Then use trim with surface command select the surface, check the direction and click OK
Hey John thank you for the feedback. I used extend surface selected the open edge shown above and selected the periphery of the cylinder as my end condition, same surface as extension type and it did not work. Like I click on the check mark and nothing happens. I also tried a variation of the options but I get the same every time. Any other ways?
I also tried to make the inner surface a solid through using thicken and knit keeping in mind the minimum radius of curvature but these options did not work either.
You don't need to select any periphery to close that edge.
Hide the Solid body
Just select that very small edge to extend one of the open surface, give a vlaue (say 0.1 or less) ckeck the preview and click OK (make sure that open edge is close now)
Show the solid body,
Click trim with surface, select the surface body and then OK
There is some sort of "thing" going on that is not allowing me to extend. I attached a picture.

could you please send the link?
Just click on that file and select save or right mouse button click and save target as..
Open in any media player and watch
Thank you so much John!! I got the idea
John, I made the inner surface as per your instructions a solid body and I wrapped it inside a bigger cylinder so I can subtract it from the bigger cylinder. Thing is I keep on getting this message every time I do the subtract "unable to create this feature because it would result in zero thickness geometry". Do you have any idea what is the solution to this problem?
