And maybe add a file/print screen of what you're trying to do?
Drive you reference plane location with a helper sketch. You can use configurations for your helper sketch dimension/s that locate your reference plane.
Double click on the plane and you would see the distance value. Now double click on the distance value and change to set per configuration.

Here's another option you might like. After creating the plane with an offset distance, with Instant3D on, click on the plane in the tree to display the dimension in the graphics area. Right-click on it and choose "configure dimension" from the drop-down. That will bring up the simplified configuration table in the screenshot. This particular part only has one configuration, but if it had more they would all be listed. You can set the desired value for each configuration, and add configurations if needed. If you will name the table (text box at bottom) then you can save it for later editing. If you don't save it, the changes you made will still be there, but the table itself will go away. I hope this helps.
