Render them as series of images with no background (white background). Edit images and replace the background with required image. Finally use movie make or Virtual dub to create a movie from those pictures.
Also make sure that Floor Shadows and Floor Reflections is turned off in your scene settings.
You could probably render with a bright green or blue or some other color background and use video editing software to remove it, same as with a green screen. Or you could stick the image into the back of the animation itself. If you need it a flat image perpendicular to the view you could insert a flat sheet part in the proper position and stick the image on it as a decal.

The easiest method is to go to the "Edit Scene" options and under background select none.
When you render the frames it will have an alpha channel with the empty background built in. No extra fumbling necessary. The blue screen method is OK, but will get weird with lighting and other features.
