top level BOM but tags are part #

I have a top level BOM using solid works file names instead ofnumbers (these show correctly) but when I go to balloon myassemblies it is placing the part file name instead of the assemblyfile name. (We do not use 1,2,3 etc. but instead we use the solidworks file names in our balloons.) My assembly configurations have"do not show child components when used as asub-assembly" checked. Has anyone else run into this? Doesanyone else know of a fix? Thanks

I think the reason you haven't gotten any answers is that nobody understands the question. I know I don't.
For instance:
"When you go to "tag" your assemblies..."

What does "tag" mean? Balloon, add item numbers, add a note?

What does ..."tag your assemblies" mean? Normally, on an assembly drawing with a BOM, you add item numbers or ballons to the individual components & sub-assemblies that make up your assembly.

please clarify and I'm sure you'll receive more help.

    Besides the good advice John gave, how are you "ballooning the assembly if item numbers are not being utilized?
    If you are creating an Annotation - Note (w/circular border or not) you can choose Link to property, then "Component to which the annotation is attached. After that, you can select SW-File Name, SW-Configuration Name or any Custom or Configuration Specific File Property you have assigned.
    Attached is an old example file I put together for our users. If it is not clear enough, let me know.

      Under system options, document properties, balloons, balloontext you are given the option of assigning a custom propertyinstead of item number. I then choose sw-filename as the property,box as the shape and tight fit. This works fine for shop drawingswhere I need to reference every part but on general assemblydrawings where we are only referencing the assemblies it is givingme problems. I do have it set to not show child components whenused as a sub-assembly. I am not having a problem in the way it islisted in the BOM just in the fact that it is giving the part filename in the balloons instead of the assembly file name.

        Alright Teresa,
        My dense brain may have finally understood the problem and this is what I now believe to be the problem.
        In order to select sub-assemblies, I have found that the "origin" is the only selectable item.
        If this is still not what you do need, I will sit back and wait for others to chime in. If this will help, then refer to the topic "Property Linked notes to sub-assembly" (under Drawings).

        Whenever you select the "link to property" for the custom balloon, you will be presented with a "Link to Property" dialog box with four different selections asking from whick location (file) do you want to grab the value of SW-Filename. You have the option to use the SW-Filename for the current "drawing" document, which will use your drawing saved name. The model in view to which the annotation is attached, which will use the SW-filename value for the subassembly. Model in view specified in sheet properties, which will use the value from the setting whenever you RMB on your drawing sheet and select "Use custom property values from model shown in:". Component to which the annotation is attached, which will use the SW-Filename value of the actual component. Check to be sure you are specifying the correct location to get the SW-Filename value from for the BOM Balloon Note.

      I just found something that helped me in case anyone else reads this post..
      I had an assembly made of different sub-assemblies and even though i had "Top Level Only" checked, I could only ballon individual part numbers.
      
      I had to go to the drawing view and click in the box of the drawing view to bring up the properties of the view that i couldnt link to. I clicked on More Properties. In the Drawing View Properties I checked the "Keep Linked to BOM" box and selected the BOM that I wanted the drawing view linked to.
      After that it worked perfectly.

        another work around for this is to insert a copy of your bill of materials into each sheet, and then hide the BOM ... then you can select top-level only, and its ok ... its not preferable, but it work.
        
        it'd be nice if you could specify a BOM that would link to ballons across multiple pages ...

Both part and assembly document files have configuration options that will allow you to specify whether to use the document file name, configuration name, or a user specified name of your choice to display in your BOM table. Each setting is saved with the part or configuration. Open your sub-assembly and check the configuration properties dialog box..under "Bill of Materials Options"...select "Document Name" to display the assembly name in the BOM table of your drawing. You also have the option to hide the child components of sub-assembly.

If you open your assembly file and this setting is correct, you may want to check the referenced configuration and BOM settings used by your drawing view to be sure the right assembly configuration is being referenced. You may also want to post version of SW and OS info if your still having issue.
