Can SolidWorks be run on an Xbox One? It seems as though the machine fits all of the system requirements except that the operating system is specific to Xbox. If not this seems like a huge market to explore since so many people already buy these machines and it is expensive to own a separate performance computer. Thanks for any input you may have!
I'm completely serious Andy. That's the kind of top notch progressive thinking that would have never gotten humans to the invention of the fork let alone advanced computing. Anyway, with the extreme and constant reduction of the price of 3D printers there is actually a substantial market opening up for home users. Home users who most likely already have a game console with the appropriate computing power. If the software needs to be reformatted a bit to be able to affordably provide it to thousands of additional users that seems like a beneficial use of resources.

Affordably? It could be argued that Solidworks is affordable in the engineering world, but surely not by home user standards.
Well, you've definitely come up with an idea that didn't occur to anyone else.
I say, why wait for SolidWorks to hijack your insight and make money off of it?
Write your own visualization framework and UI and go round up those thousands of ready customers-and just for the poetry of it, make your first model on the Xbox One, a new kind of fork!
perhaps solidworks itself is not the best application to be put onto xbox, but more realistically begin somewhere that we know is possible i.e creating modeling software via an average game engine that we know are capable of running on the xbox.

from my experience the most well versed engine would be source which uses LUA mostly. unfortunately LUA is fairly unstable from my experience, and something more high quality and i know for a fact works perfectly is the unreal engine.
To follow up on what Andy said: I don't know anything about Xbox, but if it has it's own operating system then I'd think it's unlikely in the extreme that SW works with it, or ever will.
Thanks for weighing in Glenn. SolidWorks already runs on several operating systems made by Microsoft (7, 8, Vista, and soon 10) Why not Xbox OS? If someone actually has the answer to this then by all means please elaborate. If not I'm fine being the progressive nut-job in the thread.
I guess if they can run Edrawings on an iPad, maybe it could be ported to Xbox.
Theoretically, yes an xbox one can run solidworks as you said it meets all the requirements as far as hardware goes. Could you actually run it on an xbox one? No, software does not currently exists. however i know there is a company out there that created a driver for xbox 360 controller to be used with solidworks. I know thats not what your talking about but i thought it was a cool tidbit you all may enjoy.

i'm 100% sure the xbox's bandaids they call "heat sinks" would overheat and melt like they have a history for. its a gaming console, and a shiet one at that compared to the average gaming PC. while yes it could be completely possible to run the software on the console, its just completely impractical and not at all in dassault systems target demographic. autodesk would be more likely to create something for a gaming console, as they have a target demographic of college students and 3D artists for computer animation.
if you are wanting to set up solidworks in your living room, you can do what i do when i want to play games away from my desk, and build a micro ATX computer. i used my old gamecube as a computer case, and turned it into a pc gaming console, as well as running 3ds max, maya, and other things (i dont have solidworks on it)
and actually sam, with the technology that nvidia and valve have been producing for "in home streaming" it is not entirely out of the realm of possibility for microsoft to develop their own competition. Every time they release a new surface, there are loads of new windows features that get added to the long list of things that windows is able to do.

Technically possible or not, I honestly don't believe there's a market for this to justify SW even trying.
We have issues enough running it on $3000 boxes with optimized graphics drivers, let alone trying to get it to run on a $350 gaming machine.
One can dream I guess!
