I made a model with spline and now the machinist is having isues making smooth cuts. How do I replace the splines with something else?
It is probably NOT an issue in SW. splines. If you are using a CNC mill to cut the spline, you will probably have to modify your post processor code to handle splines. We ran into the same issue, the spline was being split into small (or not so small in some cases) straight lines. When the mill cut the shape it was jerky around the curve. We had to have our post processor modified to machine smooth curves.
Lots of radii with tangent relations to the next pieces, this takes a lot more time to make look right though.
It isn't a post processor issue, it is cut tolerance issue in the CAM program. The tolerance needs to be reduced so that the toolpath is calculated closer to the profile. Most CNC controls can only command moves in straight lines or arcs, so a spline is approximated as a series of lines. Reducing the cut tolerance gets you a closer approximation.
Many CAM programs have a filtering function that will apply an arc to a series of lines within another tolerance approximation. This can reduce the amount of code significantly, if the machine is choking on the code.
Your machinist should know most of this stuff already.
