How does one transfer a license from a computer that has had a catastrophic failure? It was under a service contract with HP and after three visits, they replaced it and took the old one.

Our small company purchased a Solidworks license in 2013. It was a significant investment for our startup since we weren't and still aren't paying salaries. We rely on forums to answer questions when they arise. However we had a recent hardware failure that evidently forces us to deal with SolidWorks directly. We purchased a new laptop from HP when we bought the software along with a service contract. Last week the laptop failed. HP came out three times to repair it, but in the end gave us a new laptop and took the old one. What do we need to do to transfer the license to the new laptop? The VAR wants us to sign up for support and we don't want to pay for that service. The forums work well for us. The year we had support I think we only called them twice.
Technically you should go through the VAR and despite you not being on subscription they should not be holding you to blackmail by requesting you go on subscription.
I would email SOLIDWORKS:
activation-feedback@solidworks.com
Provide all your details, company, license and the explanation of your computer issue. I would explain why you have gone direct and request the release of the license. I would cc the VAR in as well
Contact your VAR and they will free the license from the PC.
