Do this especially for e-mailing large parts or assemblies. Build a cube around it, rebuild, and is will save as a much smaller size because it only sees a surface. Just draw a sketch (rectangle or square) on a plane next to the part and extrude a rectangle or square through the part, and maybe past it a little bit.
The recipient of the e-mail should either delete the cube, or maybe suppress it or hide it. I didn't experiment with that part of it.

A cube has six surfaces, where a sphere has one, and it works fine to just suppres the feature.
