This age old topic has come up again.

The company I work for manufactures turnkey conveyor solutions and machinery for the food processing industry and are attemping (again for the 4th or 5th time) to do a proper SW implementation after several failed/poor implementations which failed for various reasons. I now have been allocated the task of trying to make some immediate changes in a very short space of time to create a foundation that can be built upon.

I believe, for obvious file referencing reasons, that I need to implement a file naming scheme and numbering system. I would really appreciate any advice or guidelines that could be offered. What naming and numbering schemes are you using. How to handle purchased items? What custom properties are you saving into your parts/assemblies for BOM purposes, etc.

I have been racking my brains on this one for a few days already.
