Does anybody know how to allow a user to enter variable data in the Transition box pop up when doing a State Change?
Why not just set variables in actions when doing the transition? I have it set the approved by variable to the logged in user (%fullname%), and the date (%date%) set to full date 03/05/2015
This method saves time (and confusion) for the people doing the approval.
Thanks Craig. That's a great way to get approved by and date.
But we want to do this for any variable that doesn't already have data entered for it.
And make them mandatory, in order to complete the project.
We can make all variables mandatory, and I think it will give a message like "you cannot do this state change because 'Variable X' has not been entered." And then they will have to go into the data card or part file to enter it.
But wanted to make it easier for them, by offering a way to enter it directly in the transition box. To speed their workflow.
The way I do it, there is nothing to enter. Those variables don't have values until the part/drawing/excel sheet are transitioned.
If those are the only 2 variables you need entered, do a test run with the actions on. If you have more variables than that, then go through the steps needed to populate. I would just automate as many dates/sign offs/drawn by....variables as possible. It has significantly speed up our workflows going from sales order going through ---> parts through the shop --> parts out the door.
Chris, you could setup a simple Dispatch that Runs during the State Change Action. On the dispatch you can prompt the user for input (text boxt, or drop down) then push that data into the desired variable.
