Hello All,
I was wondering if anyone else out there has come across keeping the reference of a part that is inserted into another part while using windchill?
The problem is that when we have a part that is inserted into a part we can't get solidworks to keep the reference between the two once checked in to windchill.
We did discover that it will hold the reference only on the computer that the change was made on. Example: computer 1 makes a change and checks both models B, which is inserted into A, into windchill. When computer 2 opens model A from windchill computer 2 pulls last know location of model B. We have also tried adding model B to workspace prior to opening model A and we get the same results. We have also tried re-inserting model B in to model A while working in the windchill workspace on computer 1 when computer 2 tries to open it we get the same results.
The reason we use part inserted into part is for our castings and raw material components maybe there is a better way that will work for us and windchill.
I would love to hear everybody's ideas and thoughts.
Thanks
James
Hopefully it makes sense
So what's happening is Part A is opening and displaying a ? next to the derived part features (Part B) when you open it on Computer 2 This indicates that Part B is out of context and SolidWorks can't resolve the path for it that's stored in Part A-even though part B has been placed in the working directory. Let me know if any of that is not tru.
It sounds like 'search file locations for external references' is turned on in SolidWorks on Computer 1 and turned off on computer 2. With that checkbox unchecked SolidWorks looks for referenced documents in the location the reference was when the parent document was last saved. This is stored in the parent document. With the checkbox enabled, SolidWorks goes through a search algorythm that starts with the search file path in the File Locations panel of the Options dialog and then looks in the same folder as the assembly and then in a bunch of other places to locate the file.
I suggest populating that check box. Again, it's "Search File Locations for External References" and you can find it on the External References panel of the Options dialog, System Options tab.
