Hi, I recently obtained Sworks 2005 from a company that upgraded their software, it all appears to load ok but I get the following message when I try and run it -
'A problem was encountered accessing the proper security device.
The device may be missing or have invalid information. The application
will be terminated immediately.'
Can anyone help, please??
I hope you didn't pay any money for the software because you can't license it. Licenses are only good for the original purchaser and are NON-TRANSFERABLE. The way Lynn Allen explains it is that a software license is like your driver's license. You can't give your driver's license to someone else and let them use it to go drive. Likewise, someone can't give your their software license, and SolidWorks won't run without a license.
You think having the software and the USB dongle was sufficient. Hah! When the file on the dongle was created, it was tied to the CPU ID of the computer where the software was installed. So, different workstation and the software no longer works. In order to move a license from one workstation to another, you have to export the license. However when you export the license, the software won't work on the station where it is exported from, so the company would not be able to use the software. They aren't going to export THEIR license so you can use their old software.
So, sorry, you will have to get a legitimate seat of software from a reseller. Most resellers will work out a payment schedule with you, so you don't have to take a big hit.

You can't use someone else's 'old' copies of SolidWorks. When they upgrade to a new version, the old copies are essentially invalid. The licensing is done via activation or with a USB dongle. If you haven't purchased a license, you can't use the software.
