How do I migrate a 2012 SP4 PDM Workgroup Vault on a 2008 server to a 2015 SP1 PDM Workgroup Vault on a 2012 R2 server?
Moving the vault itself is pretty straightforward - copy the "vault data" folder and paste it on the new server. Install the PDM server software on the new server. Assuming you have already installed the pdm client on your computer, when you login to WPDM type the new server ID and you should be ready to go.
Hi Tom, you should use 2015 SP2 (probably available in the week of 2nd februari (sorry for first mentioning the wrong month)), there are some performance issues in WPDM 2015 SP0 through SP1.1
Thanks for the replies guys!
Do I need to lock the Vault before moving it to the new server and does the Vault have to be physically located on the same server as the PDM service?
Thanks for the assistance!
Yes lock the vault otherwise your copy could be old or files can be locked by the WPDM process. The vault doesn't need to be on the same server as the service, but it is best practise to do have it on the same server.
P.S. see the change in my first post..

If you use indexing also see S-029525: How can the Microsoft® Indexing service be installed for use with SOLIDWORKS Workgroup PDM?
OK, so my steps are:
1) Lock the Vault2) Shut down old WPDM service on 2008 server.3) Copy & paste the Vault folder to the new 2012 R2 server.
4) Install new WPDM instance on the same 2012 R2 server.5) Upgrade the vault using the SW Task Scheduler.6) Upgrade the Clients to SW 2015 SP27) Unlock the Vault.
Does that correctly sum up the steps?
I think step 5 will unluck the vault and step 5 is not upgrading the vault, but upgrading the SolidWorks files in the vault. I assume this is a test, so you know howto when SP2 is released?
Yes, at this point I'm waiting until SP2 is officially released. When I discovered that 2015 wasn't supported on a 2008 Standard server I decided I better take a closer look at what's involved with performing a complete server overhaul when migrating from SW 2012 to SW 2015. The last thing I need to do is screw up our engineering SW Vault!
I'm looking for the document S-029525 you referenced in your post but cannot find it.
Are you able to provide a hyperlink please?
Try searching the KB for only the number, it doesn't show up for me if I search S-029525 it does when I search for 029525
This is probably the intention without being said but I'll SCREAM it out anyway - Make sure you have a solid backup before you do anything and leave your entire 2008/2012 vault in tact until you are COMPLETELY comfortable with your new setup.
No worries there, I'm taking snapshots and backups of EVERYTHING before I even point my mouse at the server!
