Best practices for releasing Parts/Assembly for mfg that were built Top-Down?

I've done quite a lot of top-down design for prototypes and concepts, but never taken any of these to production in a company w' a rigorous CAD and data management process. Does anyone have any best practices on how to manage the master model and links? Do you do anything to 'freeze' them. Like breaking links from the parts to the master? Or just check in to PDM w' associated REV numbers and leave it there?

Breaking links could avoid unanticipated changes if you have to make an ECR in the future, but might make the changes really tedious.
