External Equation File Comment Line

I've been using an external text file to define several global variables.  Several different part files are linked to this txt file.  There are close to 100 variables, and there are more that will be added later.  Is there some way to add comment lines to the txt file that Solidworks will ignore (like the % character in MATLAB)?  I've tried a number of characters (%, *, -) and anytime I have more than one line starting with one of these characters, I get a rebuild error stating:

The external file has been modified. Variables in the external file are double defined. The duplicate equation is ". You will have to resolve this issue manually by removing the duplicate dimension in the external file.

Has anyone successfully added comment lines into an external equation file?

Thanks,

Luke
