Hey, my works looking to buy me some new monitors to use and i'd like to know what's popular as a drafter, what setup do you like to use or currently use? size/spec/brand would be appreciated, thanks!
I have two 24" Dell monitors. One is directly in front of me and the other is right beside it on the right. The one in front is my primary monitor, and the one I use for SolidWorks. The second is for e-mail, etc., and also Windows Explorer, which makes it handy for dragging parts into assemblies, and just generally browsing. Some people use larger monitors, but I create drawings for all my projects, and they're almost all 8-1/2 x 11, so the 24" monitor works well for me. In fact, I'm not sure I like it better than the 22" I used before.
I use pretty much the same setup with two 24" dell monitors (1920 x 1200 resolution), although I have the two monitors kind of centered in front of me. On the left I keep SW maximized and on the right I have my internet browser and windows folders. I don't have any yearning for larger monitors. Actually I think I'd rather have a third monitor than 2 larger ones, that way I could keep SW on one, my internet browser on another, and have more real estate free on last one that had my windows folders.
I would go with two Dell UltraSharp 27", although it would not hurt to go down to 24". I think it vital to have two screens. If your working off a smaller budget make only one 27" and the other smaller. I use a smaller one for emails, and general work, and have the second larger screen calibrated for the best color.
My opinion is: To have two monitors exactly the same, then comes to have them ultra sharp or at least wit IPS technology then comes resolution. A lot of monitors comes with low vertical res like 1920x1080 which I do not like e.g. seeing less in the design tree. I often have two solidworks open, the model I'm working on and an older version of it on the other screan, gives me more speed when designing to be able to look and measure how it was before etc.. I also use them similar to what Glenn was describing. My primary setup is two 30" ultra sharp dell monitors with 2560x1600 res. and the home setup is two 24" ultra sharp dell monitors with 1920x1200 res.
