I am looking at options for a 3d printer to go with my solid works. Does anyone have suggestions or comments on what make or modle to look into?
How much are you prepared to spend? What materials are you considering?
What size parts?
Would this be for personal or commercial use?
Production or prototype?
mostly personal use, was not hoping to go over 3k on a unit, less is better but at the same time I am not looking for a micky mouse unit, something durable and user freindly. I am new to this, as far as materials go, but a general purpose abs material maybe??
I only have experience with the MakerBot Replicator 2X but highly recommend it. The company I work for bought one over a year ago and it paid for itself in just a few months. We bought the latest Fifth Generation model from MakerBot and found it's build quality to be poor compared to the 2X, so it was exchanged for a second 2X. The 2X is optimised for ABS, whereas the Fifth Gen is optimised for PLA.
There are quite a few cheaper alternatives, but sometimes you get what you pay for.
Look into the Ultimaker 2 also. In either case, at that price point, be prepared to get to know your machine and how to use it well. Decide carefully, because you'll have to live with it.
