How do I convert text into geometry in Solidworks 2012?

I'm having a slight problem.  I typed a word onto a part to make an extrude cut and now I want to convert that text onto a new sketch and create a boss extrude.  I tried the "Convert Entities" tool and it gave me an error message saying "This operation requires selecting:" then gave a list of everything you can select.  I tried making it into a block and it just disappeared.  It only copies the line I have the text aligned to so I can't copy and paste it onto the surface I want to boss extrude.  I normally do that type of stuff in adobe illustrator and import it in as a DWG file so I've never had this problem.  Does anybody know what's going on here and a way around it without making new geometry and redoing everything?  Thanks in advance.
