Do you have to manually make a letter in solidworks or is there somewhere where i can just click a letter and place it on a part?

Just to expand on that a bit...
You'll want to draw a construction line where you want your text to be as that's how you'll control where the text goes. You'll want to highlight the line after invoking the text command, then just type what you want. You can control the font, its size, and its orientation from the sketch text panel.
To Jeff's point...A construction line is sometimes useful, however not always necessary. When you type your text, words etc. you can click on the screen and the text will move to where you clicked. he text is created with a for of insertion point. Instead of creating extra geometry you only need to dimension the insertion point to your part. The construction line is sometimes necessary if you want to flip the text, reverse it etc. I guess my point is why create extra geometry if you dont need to and in this case it is not necessary.
Meaning you can type your letter while in the "Text" command in your sketch.
