Best way to document PLCs with 'breakout boards'

I have a couple projects that are using PLCs with 'breakout boards'.  These are boards with connection points that ultimately connect to a PLC module (usually through a ribbon cable).  Previously, I have documented this by treating the PLC module and break out board as one unit and not showing an intervening cable.  This has at least 2 drawbacks.  1.  I only have one part in the database for what is in reality 2 parts.  2.  The cabling between module and breakout board is ignored, ie does not show up in BOM and is not available for routing in 3D.

Any suggestions on how to document this better?  Below are some images of the breakout boards.
