What you mean like, description, configuration name, configuration description, reference designator, etc...?
I imagine that the reason has to do with the information stored in the assembly as opposed to that stored in the referenced components.
You can open an assembly file in edrawings without having any of the referenced documents because the geometry and component names are cached in the assembly file. However, it doesn't include the metadata for the individual components, so my expectation is that you don't have this functionality because it would require modification of the core SolidWorks program to add that data. Now, 3DVia composer takes a different approach where the the assembly tree metadata is written to the SMG file when it's created, which is why you can open an SMG file in 3DVia Composer and do everything as though you had a complete model tree.
