out of memory error

I am running a custom system
with opteron 180
4 gigs of ram
quadra 3450 graphic card
and 3 250 gig drives in a raid 5 config
how can i be running out of ram and crashing?

    Also what operating system are you running? What version and service pack of SolidWorks?
    
    How much memory does the system say it is using when you crash out?

      Sorry was abit flustered yesterday. I am running xp pro sp2 solidworks office pro 2007 sp 3.0. mostly it happens in assy. and if i try to due a render.

        open your task manager and see how much memory you are using when you crash. also, what is your virtual memory set at?

        Are you using a 32bit OS ? If so, even you have 4G RAM, it will crash when PhotoWorks occupied 2.6~2.7GB RAM,
        
        If you are using 64Bit XP + 64Bit SolidWorks, it should not crash due to RAM issue, I tried render a assembly with 64Bit system, the machine only have 2GB RAM, but it can use up to 4GB virtual memory without crash and finish the rendering,

        You had wasted 1GB RAM, brother!
        
        due to the 32bit architecture limitation, each application only allocate 2GB RAM, this figure can be increased to 3GB, if you enable the "3GB" switch.
        
        To enable 3GB, you need to edit the boot.ini file as follow:
        
        [boot loader]
        timeout=5
        default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
        [operating systems]
        multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /3GB /userva=2900 /fastdetect /noexecute=optin
        
        But even you had enabled 3GB switch, SolidWorks still crash when it used 2.6~2.7GB RAM.
        
        SO, the only solution for you is to convert your system into a 64bit XP!

        I realize that I am not using all the ram in the pc . I spec. it for vista 64 bit. We bought this pc last year. I normally replace one pc a year. and I had planned to upgrade this one to vista buisness during 4rth quarter this year after new pc is online. Also thanks for the 3 gig switch info. I have been looking for info to give to our it guy

        'Whew, did it. threw the switch.
        Added the /sos switch as well.
        
        Went right to an assembly that yesterday I could not render due tolack of resources.
        It took about 6 mins, to render - but it worked!
        
        to bad the sales department had to have those images for a quoteyesterday...
