What objects are valid for the center point of an array?

    Jason Parker

I'm trying to perform a simple circular pattern array on a number of features I've modelled, but the problem I'm having is simply the center point of the array.  I've started with an imported .SAT file, and the typical base planes (Front/left/right/etc) are completely unrelated to the model.  I've tried to sketch a circle for my center point, I've placed a plane across the middle point (obviously plane won't work for a centerpoint) but I'm really struggling here.  I know my center point, (I have a construction circle here, but it's invalid as a center point.)  I know I have my objects properly selected, it's extremely frustrating, I wish I could use a construction line, or something I could just know is correct for the rotation point.

      Thanks in advance!

          Jason,

Try changing your construction circle to a regular circle. According to SW Help on Circular Patterns, your pattern axis can be an axis, a circular edge or sketch line, a linear edge or sketch line, a cylindrical face or surface, a revolved face or surface, or an angular dimension. (That's for SW2010, but I doubt that it has changed.)

Thanks!  When I looked for help on polar arrays, 2014 says, select object, then select axis of revolution with no additional description of what that means!  I ended up extruding the construction circle (back to regular circle) and extruded it 1" and it worked.  I feel like the results worked, but I don't really understand why.  I tried at least a dozen options before it finally accepted what I was trying to do.  (I ended up mirroring bodies, it selected the entire model since all the shapes are merged, but appeared to only mirror the features I wanted.  I went as far as deleting a lot of the main body to verify it didn't et mirrored as well.)
