Hi everyone,
I've noticed a bunch of our parts keep getting a Weldment put in as the first feature. These parts aren't being made with any sheet metal feature, but when I open them from the vault, the first feature in the tree is all of the sudden a Weldment. Has anyone else seen this?

Forgot to add.. This is SW2014, SP 4.0
If these parts were all started with the same template, then it's possible that the template is set up that way. Mine is.
They were all started with the same template, but they're carry over templates from years and years of SolidWorks and don't have the Weldment feature in the templates.... This is something new that just happened with 2014 .
Any chance that other users are adding the weldment feature to those part to get the cutlist or bounding-box functionality-even if those parts don't contain any weldment-specific features?
Nope. Only 2 of us here and ones out for the week. The weldment is showing up as the first feature and there's no other sheet metal features on the part. We don't really do sheet metal work here

Yes, but those parts are sheet metal or have weldments in them either.
There was a post recently (months) where inserting parts with the custom properties option selected would trigger the Weldments feature. I cannot find that thread now but will post if/when I find it.
Do a test.
Open a new part
Insert a part with the Transfer > Custom Properties option not selected and a Weldment feature will not be created
Edit the inserted part to include the Custom Properties and the Weldment feature will appear

When I did a search for weldment and bugs nothing came up
You should be able to delete the Weldment feature without causing a problem.

Agreed, but that only really makes sense if the new part involves the use of cut lists. Most times I'm just inserting purchased parts for modification (or size/feature matching) and have no need for the inserted parts properties.
It's a very easy thing to deselect the properties to prevent the Weldment feature, but most people wouldn't know to do that.
