A much-asked question. If you are searching online for a fully SW-certified laptop you should search for "mobile-workstations". This will likely lead you to Dell Precisions, HP, MSI, Boxx, etc.
Unfortunately there is no single answer regarding whether a non-certified system will work for you. It depends largely on the type of work you intend to do with it. The unit you mention may work ok or it may result in you needing to buy another more-capable unit.
I have this graphics card and it does not work. Do NOT buy this graphics card if you intend to use any version of solid works.
Kiley,.. what specifically does it not do or fails in doing?
SolidWorks and service package = ?
Windows version = ?
Driver version = ?
There is no driver listed for it at the below link leading me to believe that it isn't supported. First off the install window is completely broken.. gets about half way through and fails giving an error to contact tech support.
SolidWorks and service package = 2015-16 SP5
Windows version = 10 64x
Driver version = N/A
Kiley,..
yes,.. this card is not supported by SW Corp.. .. imho (and noted by Earl),..that is most likely not the issue.
what you describe sounds like it's a installer problem.. something is not able to write out and it fails (permissions?).
I know it's sp5 (it should work in 10) but do a search for Windows 10 and how to install as a windows 7 or 8 version?
.. ((after SW is installed.. grafx drivers would be another conversation))
I think you're right that it was some kind of installer error. Yesterday I went to my schools tech support department and they were able to get solid works 2014 to install via an install disk. Unfortunately, the software ware was pretty much useless since most of the buttons were scaled so small you couldn't even see them and pop up windows were just plain broken. I tried reducing my screen resolution to 1920x1080 and running solid works in compatibility mode. Neither option worked.
I will try what Earl recommended today and keep you guys posted.
As this is a SW Composer forum post, I'll say that this card may just work. Look to the 3ds.com site for card recommendations.
Also, this is a laptop based question, you'll want to disable Intel's GPU through the BIOS. SW Composer will then look to the graphics card that you have installed.

That's assuming it was intentionally placed in the Composer section. I've seen a lot of questions placed in sections that had little to no relation to the actual question.
The only NVIDIA cards listed as supported on the SolidWorks website are Quadro and GRID cards.
