Hello, I'm trying to cut a thread so the end of the top end of the thread tapers off as if it has been cut using a die. If I use a simple helix and the swept cut command the thread finishes with a square end.
Is there a way of creating a helix that finishes with a straight line coming off at a tangent as this should create the right appearance?
The simplist & quickest way is to select the flat face, create a sketch on it, convert the entities & then do an extrude cut. It's not perfect but looks OK
Instead of using the helix as the path, create a 3D sketch, convert the helix, add the desired run-out path shape, and then use the new 3D sketch as the Cut-Sweep path.

What I usually do is do create a sketch on the triangular flat and cocvert entities and then do an extruded cut thru all. You can see what it looks like in the picture below.

that's what I do chris except I do a revolve cut and make the center of the revolve off center so the cut runs out after about 120 deg or so, you can adjust the offset to get the effect you want.
I have done it that way as well but visually I didn't see much of a difference in the final result.
You can make a variable pitch helix wit a section at the end that increases in diameter until the threads no longer cut. If you have SW2014 you can look at my example model.
