Strange!!
Everyone I have followed or added as I friend I can roll over their user name & get a yellow message button on the bottom of their info or if I go to their profile the same button is there too on the right.
I have just "Followed" you & do not get the "Message" button on your info, so perhaps it has to be a two way thing & I can't message you until you "Follow" me as well.

but the links from email notifications
don't appear to work correct-

I believe that you can follow someone, by rolling over their user name & selecting follow, or add them as a friend, then you get the option to Message them when you roll over their user name. When you have done either of these you are "Connected".
