I brought in a step file consisting of 12 parts. SW brings it in ands will only save it as single assembly.
I want 12 individual files so I acan make changes, prints, etc.
How can I accomplish this?

Not sure why you're getting assemblies with no individual part. Can you right click OR left click on one of the part in assembly and see if you can open it. If you can, then they should be individual components.
Else save the assembly as Part file (File > Save As > Set the type as Part). Now from the part mode save the bodies as individual part/component using save bodies option.
Any chance if you can upload the file to check. Please use "advanced editor" in case you want to attach any files. Click on reply and then click on "Use advanced editor". Scroll down to see the option to attach file. ".

Hi Robert, As John and Deepak have eluded to it's the responsiblity of the exporting program to save the assembly as a set of parts. Where is the file coming from and can you influence the "exporter" to make sure the STEP is saving with the correct settings. If it is a serious of multibodies coming in, before you open the STEP file, go to options button (in the open file dialog) and check "Import multi-bodies as parts".

Robert,
When you import step file into SW, does it comes like an assembly or single part file?
If it is an assembly, once you save it saves all part files and assembly.
You can modify the import options to import as indivitual part files
