I can't seem to create the flat pattern of this extrusion of the character "S".
There are errors no matter I try to use "Convert to Sheet Metal" or "Insert Bends". Also, how do you remove the joints on the curved surfaces?
To remove the joints on the curved surfaces you can use the fit spline command. you will need to uncheck the box for "closed spline". I am pretty sure to be able to make a sheet metal part you will need to have a gap in the outside of you part somewhere. Hope this helps.
Hi, Tom. Fit Spline command worked fine but I still can't covert the extrusion into sheet metal cause I get the following errors.
Do you think it is because my sketch was imported from CAD that this is a compatibility issue with sheet metal? Some of the lines are slightly curved.
Unfortunately it looks like splines and sheet metal don't mix. You can't do a Base Flange or Lofted Bend from sketches with splines, and I tried leaving the gap as Tom suggested and then converting to sheet metal and that didn't work either.
But for this particular part since it is constant width you know that the flat pattern will just be one long rectangular strip. So you can create and offset from your original sketch that would be roughly half the thickness, and then measure the total length of that chain to determine how long your flat pattern length will be.
Hi, Jamil. I got the splines to join in sketch mode fine. But as you say, the extrusion couldn't be converted to sheet metal even with the gap. I think it's more to do witht the geometry of the sketch, and there is some rule being violated.
I know I can simple create a long strip with the correct interval markings, but I would really like to know what the issue here is.
You will want to convert you sketch to straight lines and true arcs. Splines and sheet metal do not mix. That is what Jamil is saying.
Will be easier to offset your sketch 50% the thickness of the sheet metal and measure the sketch length as Jamil suggests to get a pretty good approximation of material needed.
