Drawing of multiple views of "in progress" bending

I have a sheetmetal part with multiple bends of varying degrees. I would like to make a drawing showing a flat blank with the first bend location specified. Then another view with that bend completed and the next bend line shown with a dimension to the edge where the bend would be gauged from. Then another view of those two bends bent, with the next bend line shown and a dimension to the bent edge where the next bend line will be gauged from and so on. I tried a couple different methods with no success. I ended up using Solidworks to generate the various views, then exported the drawing to my 2D software, then added and dimensioned the appropriate bend lines.

You can use Configurations for this. Use the Fold and Unfold features in sequence to show the features as they are performed. Then paste 3 or ? views you need into the drawing and just update the configuration you need to show from the Configuration Manager for that view.

      Unfortunately, I can't seem to upload files. I created a configuration of the part with the appropriate bends unfolded. But am unsure how to put them into the drawing. If I bring them in as a flat blank, all the bends are unfolded. If I bring it in as the "current view", then no bendlines are present.

        It works fine here. just paste 5 views of the same part view you wish to show into a drawing. Then select each one and change the Reference Configuration from the Drawing View# that pops up.

        I just noticed that you drew a full thickness extrusion for the part shape. You can use a single line and use the Base Flange feature there. It will add the thickness/bend radius you choose. This would be helpful if you later change the thickness.

        I'm not sure what you mean by "paste 5 views of the same part view", could you elaborate.

        Literally just that. Control-C to copy the first view and paste or Control-V the other views as required to show all the bends. I think I remember 5 bends. Paste 4 more views and then just change the Reference Configuration to the bend Configuration you wish to show. Sorry, I have a tooling manufacturer waiting on a confirmation for a tooling drawing in 2013 right now.

        Create a Configuration for each of your bend steps, suppressing or unsuppressing the appropriate bends for each step.
        
        Each view will show the configuration for that step.

        You can see the view was copied 5 times, I then selected each view in succession and updated the Configuration to the bend # I wanted to show. Sorry I have no more time right now.

        There's a mis-understanding on what I'm trying to accomplish, here is a DWG file with what I'd like to do in Solidworks. Bernie is sort of on the right track. I did as you suggested and made a different configuration for each step of the bend process. But I also need to have it show the bend lines that still aren't bent. The reason for this is that we are bending in a press brake with single point tooling. After bending the first bend, the operator needs to know the distance to the next bend, then from that bend to the next. Hopefully the DWG will clear things up.

        I see what you're saying here, you really only need one bend centerline dimension for the angle bend. The other's being 90's should be easy. Are you sure of your bend allowances and deductions and are they used in the model?

        On multiple bent parts, I like to supply all the bend dimensions, that way if something is wrong, it comes back to me. Nothing bothers me worse than parts getting "missed" at inspection and ending up at our customers facility, only to have them call me.
        
        I understand your concern on the bend allowances, but they are figures that we have found work with the tooling that we are using. I get a laugh when "software folks" tell me how their software has the best bend compensation. It's all based strictly on the bending method, and type of tooling, and material. If you show me someone who can predict bend compensation +/- .005 with a mathematical formula, I'll show you the next millionaire.
        
        I think there should be a way to get Solidworks to generate the proper drawings, I have yet to figure it out.

        Actually I've been doing this for years, even someone with almost no experience can set up the brake. We kept these setup sheets for all the angle bend jobs. On the sheet I attached this is what I would give the brake operator. Of course I would replace the text notes with actual bend values and include the math showing the expression used to get to that value. I would not give 4 or 5 views and they never asked for more.

        As a plus, if this could be plotted 1:1 I would do that too. They could do a quick check visually.

I thought you might appreciate this one, I did it in AutoCAD back in early 2000. The left side is the flat dimensions in between the bends.
