The "home use license" is only available with the network license version. If you have the standalone you can install it and activate it on 1 other computer as a backup as long as it is not used at the same time as the main license.
Is this information about being able to have HUL license for Server based licences still correct? Is this also working in UK? As I've contacted our VAR (cadtek) and 2 different people said that SolidWorks no longer supplies HUL's because people used it as normal day to day licences.
If you could tell me more about that (as i'm trying to get one for me for use at home)
I have not heard of any changes to the HUL licensing (at least here in the US).
thx, I guess US is in better position or it's just our VAR doesn't know what he's doing.
You might also check with a diff. person at your VAR. Sometimes people don't know for sure and cover with what ever is easiest for them. Sometimes people just make mistakes or think they know something.
It also wouldn't hurt to check with another VAR.
In the US our VAR said we could get a separate license to work from home. What that lic. is called I'm not sure.
That's what I did just about 20minutes ago and another VAR in UK said that SW still issues HUL numbers but first theres some kind of paperwork to sign (probably something about not using both machines at once, etc.)
I wrote to SW sales department with same question to get information form the source and definite answer.
Thanks for all replies.
I had this email from my VAR in April 2014:
Important changes to the way your SOLIDWORKS
license is activated.
Up until the 2nd April 2014, a SolidWorks license could be
activated twice; i.e used on the Computer at your place of Work – and then
also activated on a separate computer. A few customers used this second
activation for use at home or another physical location, but a few
customers inadvertently have used this feature to use two licenses
SolidWorks have now changed the second activation Policy such
that the license can only be activated on ONE Computer. If you wish to use
this license on a separate computer, you must “Release” the license – and
then Activate the license on the separate computer. This is a simple
process, but means you must be cautious about where the license is being
used, and releasing the license if you wish to use it at another location.
A Typical scenario would be (You will need internet access):-
- SOLIDWORKS license is installed and activated on Computer A –
For example, at your place of work.
- You use SOLIDWORKS for design
- If you now wish to use SOLIDWORKS on Computer B - the license
is “Released” via (Help>Transfer license)
- SOLIDWORKS license is then activated on
- Use SOLIDWORKS for design
- Finish design on Computer B
- If you now wish to use SOLIDWORKS license back on Computer A,
You must ensure SOLIDWORKS license is “Released” (Help>Transfer license)
- Re activate back on Computer A
This is an important process to understand. Please do contact
the technical team or your Account Manager if you have any questions.

I know you're using fixed licenses, and this is topic about those, but I'm actually asking about HUL for server licenses (that's what my company uses)
