i think i know what hppened, this box gets handles welded on to it as an option so i made a configuration with the handles. the problem is when i make a drawing to put the handles on the box shows as parts instead of just the box. i think if i made an assembly to put the handles on it would work unless there is a way to leave the handles in the box drawing as a configuration and have it show as 1 part in the handle assembly drawing.
You can set the BOM to display the the assemby as one part, click on the BOM and the Property Manager will display, there is a setting so show top level only.
I'm confused. You said you have a sheet metal assembly. Why shouldn't the BOM show each part? The only way I would expect a BOM to show only one part is if you had a multi-body part instead of an assembly.
if i bring the box into an assembly drawing and add the handles it shows up as one part, selecting top assembly works here. i wonder if i can leave the handles in the box as a configuration and make an assembly drawing of the box and handles?
The BOM will produce all the parts that make up the assembly.
