Linking Variables to Excel - Check Box

I am trying to create a new template in EPDM where it creates a new excel file and connects the variables on the file data card to named cells in excel.  I have been able to link all of the variables on the data card (thanks to this webpage!), but I can't seem to get the check boxes to link.

I named the cell the same as the variable name.  Then I went to the excel properties and made sure that the variable was able to "Link to content".  I saved the excel file and went to my data card to put a check in the checkbox. I checked the box, saved the data card and went back into my excel file.  Nothing was showing up in the cell, so I went back to the custom properties tab in the excel properties and noticed the the link was no longer there.  There was a 1 next to the variable, but no link.

Has anyone run into this before?  I've tried other check boxes and they do the same thing.  I tried changing the format of the cell in excel, changing the variable type in PDM, but nothing seems to work.  I could change it to a drop down, but I think it would be a lot more straightforward for users if it were a checkbox.

Thanks for your help! It is very much appreciated.
