Best Practice for Tracking History of Non SW Files

    Robert Pugh

Hello all.  I'm finding myself in the surprising situation where I need to convince management that they should not be keeping multiple copies of the same .pdf docuements in EPDM for the purpose of tracking history.  In other words, they want to copy out a new document with the revision number tacked on to it's file name every time it is revised up.  In our case, except for the file name, all the metadata stays the same between these multiple copies making things very confusing when searching.

Is there a simple, clear language manual out there that describes best practices when using EPDM to maintain history of non SolidWorks files.  An official looking manual will go a long way in helping management understand how to properly use their tool.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I'm not aware of any official SW document that has EPDM best practices documented.

You have to assume these guys don't have all the facts if they think making multiple copies in EPDM is a good way to track a document's history. What if you made a short video showing how easy versions are created, how they can then be recalled and ending with the history dialog interface?

Then, if they still won't play, remove their "add" rights to the vault.
