Mark, your meaning is not clear.
Do you mean sectioning a model on your sketch plane so that you can more easily see nearby features and relate your sketch to them -or do you mean paring a model into multiple bodies and files
-or do you mean creating a boundary around an arbitrary region on a surface using a sketch?
Or do you mean breaking a line at a certain point using split entities into 2 or more parts?
I need to make close tolerance fixtures for relatively complex components so I will often add a split into a cavity in order to obtain the profile at a specific point in the solid. I can then use this edge profile to help build other geometry. I hope this (partially) answers the question.
