i see there is a good selection of sizes but i am not having much luck changing the lengths of the sections ,is this possible ?
when i try to edit the sketch dims i cant .
Or use the Weldments feature with a single straight line, then you place a 2D section and extrude to length needed. Also gives freedom to add custom sections later if you want, or change on the fly.
What Justin said. Save the profile drawing (using the proper procedure) as a .sldlfp file, then use the Structural Shape function from the Weldments toolbar to create the beam in your part file.
thanks for the replies . i see there is a beam calculator menu so that gives me a method to create the length and size. but say i want to create a beam of the required size and export it to autocad how would i do that and how would it perform as a 3d part in autocad
? say i want to draw the mounting holes in the beam ,better to do in SW ?
Why don't you do all the changes in SW and why in ACad.
some companies prefer to stick with Acad for their CAD not my choice but they dont want to invest in another CAD system .
so i was just looking at all my options
You could save your SolidWorks model as a ACIS (Sat) file and imported into AutoCad.
Remember that the Sat file version may need to be changed (in options when saving) to allow import, if i remember correctly it only supports Sat files upto Ver 7.
In sketch draw line and dimension to the length of you require, exit, open up the Weldment tab ans select Structural Members, from the drop down list select the type you require then select the sketch line and member will be created.
Then you can edit length add holes / notches ect all in Solidworks no need to export to AutoCad.
i have drawn some mounting holes at 1 end of a beam and would like to do a copy move to the other end of the beam ,is this possible to do ?i am sure i used this feature before but as a newbie its a devil to recall things some times.
Set a reference plane mid-plane between the ends of your beam & use it to mirror the hole feature.
