I have upgraded my laptop and installed Solidworks and everything looks great except...when I open an assembly, the parts list is incomplete. Solidworks queries me for the location of every missing component until the assembly is once again complete. Everything works fine at that point but I can't do this for every assembly. If the locations of the component parts aren't stored in the assembly file, where else would that information be? Thanks for any ideas.
Thanks Gary. I think that's exactly what happened except I didn't move anything. I did a fresh install of Solidworks on a new laptop and I'm pulling down assembly files from a shared server as usual. So probably the real question is: how to maintain references when installing Solidworks on a new computer?
If you access the same assemblies from another machine is the behaviour the same?
It seems unlikely that the files have moved on the server. When you are at the file open dialog, click on your assembly and then, to the right, click on references. Does it show paths for the parts? If it's not something obvious, I may be out of my depth. Maybe someone who has experienced this before can chime in.
By any chance do you have a recent copy of your configuration or user setup? These are made using SolidWorks Copy Settings Wizard. If you have one it will likely correct your situation afer reinstalling. I usually make a new one once a month.
It sounds like your assembly has lost all its references. Did you change any of your file/folder structure without using Solidworks Explorer? Like just dragging and dropping file onto your laptop? When you open an assembly, SW looks for the location of each aprt and subassembly file. If they are moved (like with Windoes Explorer) the references will be lost and must be re-established (like you've been doing).
