Screen Fill Pattern on Sheet Metal (Cylinder) Crashes

I'm trying to create a fill pattern on a flattened cylinder of sheet metal. I can create the pattern no problem, but solidworks crashes when I try to fold the sheet. I would also like to create a tighter pattern, right now it seems I can only make holes about 1/16" Diameter. I'd like to create a screen on the part. I was wondering how to get around the crashes? My PC has 16GB Ram, Intel Processor (i7) and 64-bit OS. Do I need a more poweful computer or is there something wrong with the way I am creating my model? I've attached two models I was playing around with.

This is normal behavior.

Perforation has always been a stumbling block for Solidworks.

Compounding the problem is the tube shape.

Just do a small area of the tube for depiction.

The fill pattern is better suited for small areas.

e.g. ventilation, fan openings, etc.

For full sheets of perforation it's better to use a material callout in the title block or notes.

We are trying to have something like this 3D printed. That is why an apperance or callout on the drawing isn't what we need. Thank you though.

regardless of what your plans are downstream, this type of feature will bog Solidworks down.

performance will degrade as the perforated area increases in size.

I have a Quadro 2000 and it took me about 4.5 mins

Thank you. That is what I thought I was going to hear. I have looked at those other posts before, I was just hoping that someone figured it out another way to do this or solidworks changed something to allow for this.

I agree with Ken on SW being slooooooow on perf. I wish they offer

the sheetmetal guys option in fill pattern command to leave the sketch

only then when you flatten the part the sketch would be seen and you

could use it for punching or lasering. I try to use fill pattern if

possible after flat pattern if the part allows it.

I was able to get it to work without any crashes, though it took a couple of minutes to happen. While this probably doesn't relate, what graphics card and driver are you using? Have you run SolidWorks Rx to see if you have any conflicts?

I did get it to work also but I had to walk away from my computer for about 20 minutes. I also have to turn off realview graphics to rotate around the screen and look at the part. I have a Nvidia Quadro 600. I have not run Solidworks RX.

I've got a Quadro 600. It's a good card, but it's at the lower end of performance, so it's not surprising that realview-especially ambient occlusion-would dog the performance
