Some don't see right away the difference between a drawing format file and a drawing template file (formats are applied to an existing drawing). Is that the issue?
As Dwight said, drawing templates and sheet formats can be confusing for new users. I know it took me a while to get a handle on them. There is quite a bit of discussion on them here: https://forum.solidworks.com/thread/57204 if you'd like to take a look.
Is there a specific issue with your drawing you can't get right? Title block? BOM? The file formats such as .sldprt vs .prtdot (part file and part template)? Drawing file templates .slddot vs sheet formats .slddrt?
Frankly it escapes me a bit at the moment, and I'm sure Glenn's link and Deepak's videos probably explain more than the questions I've posed, but if you're having trouble with something specific, let us know.
