The description in the 'save' and 'save as' dialog box disappeared. I don't know why. It may have been the result of upgrading Microsoft Office. Anyone know how to get it back? I'm running SolidWorks 2012.
Not sure what OS you're running but try this:
To enable the description box: Go to Organize->Layouts->Details Pane in the File Open Dialog; see the description box to enter a description.

Still no description line. It’s just gone altogether, whether it’s a part, assembly, or drawing. Even opening parts where a description was put in. The OS is Windows 7 Professional.
Hi, I've been having this problem for a while and the folks over at CADTEK came up with the solution for me.
Locate "sldpropertyhandler.dll" in explorer, it should be in your main SolidWorks installation folder.
Run Command Prompt (cmd.exe) (make sure you run it as an administrator). Type: regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\SolidWorks Corp\SolidWorks\sldpropertyhandler.dll"" (or whatever the file path to your "sldpropertyhandler.dll" file may be)
And voila, your description field SHOULD appear!
All credit goes to CADTEK, this had me stumped for ages!
That is a great solution...straight from the knowledgebase. Just have to search for "Description Save As Missing"
Hi James, I have the same problem and I tried to fix using your way. However it gave me message "The module "C:\Program Files\SolidWorks Corp\SolidWorks\sldpropertyhandler.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070005." Can you help me with this issue?
Error 0x80070005 in Windows Update when you try to install updates
I have tried that but it did not work. I also tried using windows tools to check disc errors and that did not work either.
From the link I posted...
Error code 0x80070005 is also known as "ACCESS DENIED." It usually occurs when you lack file or registry permissions that are required
Do you have full administrator permissions?
I think you are correct Kelvin. I tried that without the full admin rights and it did not work.
yes I do have full administrator permission. I had the description dialog box before I upgraded to SW2015, then it disappeared after the install. I am using the File Properties to add the description but its a pain.
The problem is solved by right clicking cmd.exe and run as administrator. Thank you for all your help!
It works, thank you!
[added 9/01/15] In my case, it works for a few weeks, then stops working, and the fix has to be done again.
My team was having the same problem - disappearing DESCRIPTION property in drawings.
I tried the regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\SolidWorks Corp\SolidWorks\sldpropertyhandler.dll fix.
seemed to work for a while, but it is happening again.
no change to our PC or software.
This is getting to be a regular thing with me having to do this. Obviously, something is broken.....
I have had to manually fix this problem twice recently with the regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\SolidWorks Corp\SolidWorks\sldpropertyhandler.dll fix". However the problem has again reared it's ugly head.
I contacted my VAR who suggested a "Clean Install". After reading the Clean Reinstall Instructions, I estimate I will lose a day and will have to reinstall my addins.
I'm not keen on a complete reinstall and am not very happy!!
Surely DS should investigate this as a matter of urgency and correct the problem permanently. As a fully paid up customer, I expect service!!
Has there been a permanent fix for this other then a complete reinstall? I hate having to fix this every week or so.
There is hope on the horizon. SWX just updated the SPR information for this bug.
Description: Re-registration of 'sldpropertyhandler.dll' may be needed every time when updating Microsoft Office 2013 on a specific environment.
Version: 2017 b2
This SPR is also fixed with 2016 SP4. Time to upgrade.
Good suggestion, but we are locked in to 2015 for at least several more years, due to production (factory) integration. We cannot upgrade design until certain software is available to production that is compatible with updated features of SolidWorks (file type support for scripts that run programs that harvest data from solidworks files).
Lack of support for old versions of SolidWorks is becoming more problematic each year. At some point, it will be easier to migrate to another CAD package than add to the book of work arounds we document just to keep the factory going.
Running 2016 SP5, notes linked to custom properties are still disappearing, and custom properties come and go as they please in my drawing template...
That sounds like a totally separate issue. The SPR is specific to just the description custom property, and not other custom properties.
Thanks everyone for the help, this saved my hair being pulled out!
I used Rodrigo's bat file and went one step further...
1) Added a '/s' to the bat file to get it to run without prompting the user
2) Created a container for the bat file to run it as admin
All the user needs to do is...
a) use notepad (or your preferred text editor) to change the addresses to wherever the bat and vbs files are stored
b) create a shortcut to the vbs file in the startup folder (go to run, then type in shell:startup)
My dll was being dropped on restart, every fricking day, and this sorted it.
