Is there a way find out what the negative space volume is of a volute casting?
Not 100% as I'm in a simulation and can't test, but thought would be to make a envelope body over the casting, then Subtract bodies, and then delete/trim bodies until you're left with only the inside, which Mass Properties would show a volume of.
As Justin said, you can use Combine on a multi-body part, or you can bring your part into an assembly, make a part that completely envelops your part, and then use the Cavity function to subtract the original part from the larger part. If the original part is completely enclosed, then you will end up with an outer body and an inner body. The volume of the inner body should be the volume enclosed in your original part.
In SW2014 there is a new feature, whose name I can't think of right now, that may make this quite a bit easier. Look it up in the "What's New?"
Jerry, I thought I remeber seeing something for this in the Rollout, but am running 2014 now and can't find anything...
Peirre, another option I left out is to create on offset surface from your interior faces, offset 0.00. Then place a plane cap or lid over the openings. Delete the solid body, and choose Knit surfaces, select all, then Try to Form Solid. Then again regular Mass Properties will show.
Intersect command was built for this and is the easiest/fastest
