When solidworks crashes I loose the customised button settings, this is easy with sone but when I have several macros it becomes more time consuming. I have tried to save setting which retains the search settings and general settings but is there a way to save the button configurations?

Like Matt said, the copy settings wizard is the way to go. Understand that anytime you make any settings change make sure you run the wizard to constantly keep your settings backed up. When you run the wizard make sure you are capturing all of the keyboard, toolbar etc settings. Also it is a good idea to keep these settings on a network drive with the hopes that it gets backed up daily.
Cheers but it doesn't work as this was what I tried before. Just tried it again and then solidworks crashed, tried restoring to no avail
So, you are saying that you run the wziard, save all of the settings checking the proper selections. Save it to a file. Then your SW session crashes, you double click on the settings file, it brings up the wizard again and asks you to reload all of the settings and you don't get them back?
What version are you running?
Is this crashing happening after you do the exact same sequense of commands? You might want to think about running the SW Rx tool. Then send this saved file into your VAR for evaluation.
correct in the settings saving etc. The crash was due to another solidworks failure
What failure might that be?
If it is repeatible, then I would use the Rx tool like I suggested in my last posting.

Where you're on '14 SP0, I'm guessing this is a fairly new install? Sadly, I've been hearing a lot of stability issues with '14, which is a regression over the previous years.
Please forgive me as I put on my AE hat for a moment. Have your run SolidWorks Rx to check for compatability issues? When you installed, did you have it remove all the previous version's files? Do you lose all your settings (file locations, customized buttons, etc) or just a few? If you're losing everything, I'd say it's a registry issue. Do you have admin rights to your PC?
In answer to the questions above, I have done all of these at some stage due to glitches with this new release, I have also updated the graphics card software, and I only have 3 applications runiing on the PC at the same time.
Ok, so going off of what you didn't say, SolidWorks Rx is showing no issues. I'll go back to my original thought that it's a registry issue, like Kelvin said. Have you ever gone into your registry? Is this something you'd be comfortable with?
So, if what Jeff said is true that you are getting nothing from the Solidworks Rx tool, then maybe you should do a clean uninstall and then reinstall with Kelvon suggested.
There's something odd going on here. Even without saving your settings with the Copy Settings Wizard you shouldn't be losing changes because of a crash. You might want to consider contacting your VAR about the problem and get them involved.

SP1 and SP2-EV are available, and SP2 should be released any day now.
Try updating to see if the problem is resolved.
Resetting the registry might be in order.
I have the same issue with 2014 SP1. I lose all custom toolbar settings when I crash, only difference is I can use copy settings wizard to get them back, so I havnt worried about it to much.
After setting all the custom toolbars, keyboard shortcuts, etc, exit SW. This when SW really saves the settings to the registry. If SW crashes before you are able to close it properly, any new settings will be lost.

I've also the same issue, sw2014 sp2. Even after closing SW, restarting WIndows, starting SW... after a crash the custom settings are dissapeared. No effect on the toolbar when tying restore custom settings from the saved file.
Renamed the Solidworks folder in the registry... no effect, same issue.
Anyone with a fix?

I can confirm this is still an issue with 2014 SP2. If you kill solidworks through the task manager it loses the settings too.

I'm one step further. Deinstalled sw 2013, reinstalled sw2014 and problem solved.
The custom toolbar is still not imported, but custom shortcuts are.
After customising the toolbar, and after a crash, the custom toolbar survives!

I have the same issue as the original post.
I add macros to the main toolbar. This way for example when no files are open we have a macro to quickly open files in our system. When Solidworks crashes, these macro buttons disappear. Saving custom settings does not place these macro buttons back in the toolbar.
A general thing about settings being lost upon crash.
My experience is once a new setting is applied and SolidWorks crashes during that same session, the settings are lost.
Here's the thing I do to prevent settings being lost:
1 Start a fresh session of SolidWorks.
2 Start UI "New Part" and Add buttons/macro's/modify settings to desired values.
3 Repeat step 2 for new "New Assembly" and "New Drawing" UI when applicable.
4 When done, safe your personal settings.
5 Most important: Close down the session of SolidWorks!
3 Restart SolidWorks. Now the settings are not lost when a crash occurs.
It seems upon close down the settings are finaly saved.
In the first tab of the task pane (the tabs that expand on the left of your screen) in the SW Tools section there is a copy settings wizard that should do the trick.
