I'm trying to learn configurations (finally - been using SW for 8 years). I set up 3 different configurations, and when you click between them, they don't change. So, I did some more reading. For each configuration I did the Rebuild/Save mark. Now, each configuration changes when I click it. But other models with working configurations show the checkmarks, not the "save" icon. So I "removed" the Rebuild/Save mark from each configuration. Now my check marks are back, and the configurations still work.
What did I actually do? What's the proper procedure?
(I am showing a movable assembly in 3 different configurations: extended, retracted, and centered.)
Sometimes when you change a part feature for configuring, you need to pay attention to the "this configuration/all configurations" option. So you'll change a dimension, hit rebuild, but you actually changed ALL configs instead.
I have no idea if this was your case in your situation, but it's a configuration gotcha that still gets me every now and then.
Also, a huge boost to configurations was when they added the "configure feature" dialog box. This is a great productivity tool, and it lets you see at a glance what is set up. There's a button on the bottom to "rebuild all configurations" This ensures that all the changes propogate throughout the part or assembly and it lets you know if something went wrong.
Also, I recommend going through one of the SW built in tutorials on configs. It might shed some light on stuff for you.
They can be tricky, but incredibly useful too if you can wrap your brain around them.
Good luck!
