Hi, I have just downloaded some step files of aluminium extrusion profiles. I would like to know how to make a template of the profile so that in future I can create new parts and use the template and just specify the length to create many different lengths.

Hi Justin, I'm not quite sure what you mean by top down assy.
I have tried to create a new weldment profile and add it to the library as I thought that would be the best option.
However, it is not working. When I open a new part and draw a line I get an error message when I try to use the new profile.
"Library Feature is empty"
The sldlfp file that I created is in amongst all the other standars profiles i.e angle, channel, pipe etc
I can't understand why it won't work.
k...now only i understud ur question ...k your previous way is right but some times that problems is occuring there in saving time..u can try tis option . open ur any one standard profile and save as that change that name and Descriptions and there u delete that execting profile and draw ur new profile then save that after that u can get it ur new profile...
Hi Justin, this method of opening an existing profile and Save As now works with my new profile. I still don't know why it won't work the way SW says I should do it.

You're right about saving that sketch as a .sldlfp file and using it with the Structural Shape function being the best way. The problem is in the way it's saved. When saving a .sldlfp file you have to have the sketch highlighted when saving. If it's not highlighted when saved you will get that error. Open the file again, click on the sketch in the tree to highlight it, then save again. It should work then.
Hi ...michael...first u can import ur step file in solidworks .Then u have save in solidworks now ur stl file is converted to solidworks part file.after that u can use top down assy there u make a referance with that profile part and sketch on part wat progile u want and make it a part file .after that u can create all those thinks.
